The Lincoln Legacy

The opposite of success is often thought to be failure, which is completely untrue. The opposite of success is not failure—the opposite of success is quitting. And Abraham Lincoln is the definition of one who never quit and lived a life of persistence and integrity.  In the spirit of what would be Abraham Lincoln's 209th birthday, I think a quick recap of his remarkable life of overcoming hardship and failure is in order: Born into poverty, Lincoln entered the world on February 12, 1809 near Hodgenville, Kentucky.  In 1816, Lincoln's family was forced out of their home and off their...

Glance Back But Focus Ahead — A Life Perspective

In light of today being Groundhog Day, I'm reminded of that celebrated little marmot that emerges each year from his burrow in the spirit of predicting the transfer from winter to spring. In a small town in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil steps out on February 2nd in search of his shadow. If successful, winter is still six weeks strong. But if there is no shadow, spring is coming early. It's all up to you, Phil! We need you to glance back to tell us what the future holds. "It Was A Very Good Year" — An Adaptation of a Classic

When I was seventeen It was a very good year. It was a very good year for a teenage kid On warm spring nights Playing soccer under lights On AstroTurf so green When I was seventeen. When I was twenty-one It was a very good year. It was a very good year for a college kid At a computer he'd stare No longer in despair From a life come undone Before I was twenty-one. When I was thirty-five It was a very good year. It was a very good year for entrepreneurship Providing independent means With BILLY Footwear destinies Success began to thrive When I was thirty-five. Now there is much to report Adding value is...

If— by Rudyard Kipling | BILLY Footwear

I was first introduced to the words of Rudyard Kipling when I was around twelve years old. The location was Camp Parsons, a Boy Scout summer camp on the shores of Hood Canal in Washington State. An excerpt from Kipling's poem "The Explorer" is carved in a large, wooden plaque, which has remained prominently displayed in the Dining Hall for nearly as long as the camp has been in existence. The words are as follows:  Something hidden. Go and find it. Go and look behind the Ranges—Something lost behind the Ranges. Lost and waiting for you. Go! I have mentioned...
