Faith — The BILLY Defined Series | BILLY Footwear

In the early morning hours of October 9, 1996, I awoke to find myself already screaming for help. Lying flat on my back, I was staring straight up into the air. Adjacent to me was the south-facing wall of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, my college residence at the University of Washington. Beneath me was a cold concrete walkway, which lead to the front door. There was no one around. And I was very confused. "Why am I outside?" I wondered. "And why can't I move?" I had no idea my body was broken.  Soon one of the widows on the second floor opened and the head of a friend emerged. First hearing, and now seeing me make a ton...

Love — The BILLY Defined Series | BILLY Footwear

"Faith makes all things possible… Love makes all things easy."  This quote by American evangelist Dwight L. Moody is written on a little sticky note on the inside of the front door our Seattle condo. My wife and I became married in September of 2015 and in the days leading up to our union, my wife's sisters raided our home and peppered it with countless messages of love. And of those notes, many still remain in their original places a year and a half later.  On one of our bedroom doors are the words of Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, "Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage." On the stereo are the words...

Love — The BILLY Defined Series | BILLY Footwear

In the early 1990s, we were reminded once again of Seattle's ability to breed amazing musicians. In the late 1940s, Ray Charles called Seattle home along with Quincy Jones. In the 1950s, it was where Jimi Hendrix spent his youth before moving to Tennessee, New York and then England in the 1960s. In the 1970s, it was the emergence of Heart. And then in the 1980s, something was brewing, which the music industry would later categorize as grunge.  Influenced by artists such as Black Sabbath, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Kiss, and the Ramones, a new style of music surfaced.  Bands that fit the bill were Alice In Chains, Candlebox, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam. Precursors to some of...

Kindness — The BILLY Defined Series | BILLY Footwear

One of my favorite movies starring Gwyneth Paltrow is the movie Sliding Doors. For those not familiar with the film, it is a 1998 British-American romantic comedy. Its premise revolves around an opening scene where the heroine is rushing to catch her train. The storyline then splits—one track follows the character as if she caught the train, while a parallel track follows her as if she missed it.  I was reminded of this film recently when I was trying to catch our Seattle light rail. As I hurried to my train, I saw the doors close right in front of me. In fact, I was so close to making it that I actually touched the button on the outside of the...
