The Lincoln Legacy

The opposite of success is often thought to be failure, which is completely untrue. The opposite of success is not failure—the opposite of success is quitting. And Abraham Lincoln is the definition of one who never quit and lived a life of persistence and integrity.  In the spirit of what would be Abraham Lincoln's 209th birthday, I think a quick recap of his remarkable life of overcoming hardship and failure is in order: Born into poverty, Lincoln entered the world on February 12, 1809 near Hodgenville, Kentucky.  In 1816, Lincoln's family was forced out of their home and off their...

Glance Back But Focus Ahead — A Life Perspective

In light of today being Groundhog Day, I'm reminded of that celebrated little marmot that emerges each year from his burrow in the spirit of predicting the transfer from winter to spring. In a small town in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil steps out on February 2nd in search of his shadow. If successful, winter is still six weeks strong. When I was thirty-five It was a very good year. It was a very good year for entrepreneurship Providing independent means With BILLY Footwear destinies Success began to thrive When I was thirty-five. Now there is much to report Adding value is...

Persistence — The BILLY Defined Series | BILLY Footwear

In light of the recent New York City Marathon where American distant runner Shalane Flanagan finished first place, I am reminded of the power of persistence. Flanagan was the first American woman to break the finish line tape in forty years. When asked to describe the emotion she was feeling, the thirty-six-year-old victor stated, "This is the moment I've dreamed of since I was a little girl." This story is so beautiful on multiple levels. Simply looking at the race itself, marathons are grueling.  Very few people on earth can just show up to a marathon and run 26.2 miles...

Beginning in 1966 and running for only three seasons, Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, envisioned a story set in outer space, yet akin to Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels. But more daring, his creation subliminally addressed contemporary issues of the time, which included social inequality. One of the classic characters of the multi-ethnic cast was Montgomery Scott. Scotty was the Chief Engineer on the starship Enterprise, and as luck would have it, he continually had the good fortune of coming to the rescue in terms of keeping the ship together when all was in harms way. And in dramatic form, when...
